Embarking on new experiences can often feel like entering a whirlwind of chaos, especially when you’re trying something as unfamiliar as surfing for the very first time. The overwhelming sensations of water splashing, waves propelling the board in unexpected directions, the leash tangling, the board trembling beneath you, and even the wetsuit allowing water in can create a sensory overload for the brain. Amidst all this chaos, the brain struggles to process the torrent of information instantaneously. With everything happening so rapidly and being entirely novel, it’s only natural that your mind might start to chime in with less-than-enthusiastic thoughts like “this isn’t enjoyable,” “this isn’t what I anticipated,” or even “this is awful.”
It’s okay. The brain isn’t exactly fond of situations it can’t promptly understand or control. That’s why these unfamiliar experiences might elicit negative thoughts – the brain’s way of responding to uncertainty.
However, there’s a more reliable source of information than your brain’s initial reaction: your feelings. Consider the feelings that emerge after the experience of surfing. What emotions do you carry with you after exiting the water?
There’s a notable discrepancy that often arises between thoughts and feelings in new scenarios. The key lies in prioritizing the emotional aspect – how the experience makes you feel – rather than fixating on your thoughts about it.
This principle is equally applicable in other aspects of life.
When diving into something new, it’s almost inevitable that your initial performance won’t be stellar. After all, how can you excel at something you’ve never attempted before? Amidst the flurry of new information and sensations, it’s crucial to tune into the feelings this endeavor evokes.
Consider this: does the experience leave you invigorated or depleted of energy? What emotions linger after the initial encounter?
Your emotions and feelings act as guiding beacons. Unlike thoughts, which are often influenced by external influences like parents, peers, and society, your feelings are unique to you. They reflect your true essence. No one else can dictate how you should feel while engaging in an activity or after it. Only you have that insight.
So, as you navigate the waters of new experiences, remember to tune into your emotions. Trust your feelings as a compass guiding you towards pursuits that resonate with your genuine self. Dismiss the potentially misleading thoughts that might arise. Embrace the realm of emotions and listen to what they’re telling you.
Always remember: You are truly remarkable!
